The Head of Centre for Ageing Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Joseph Osafo, has issued a stern warning to the country’s two main political parties—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—urging them to desist from using state security institutions to intimidate political opponents.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show on Monday, May 26, Prof. Joseph Osafo accused both parties of exploiting national security agencies, including the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the National Security Secretariat, as tools to silence dissent and harass critics.

“It is unacceptable for any political party—whether NPP or NDC—to misuse our state security institutions as weapons against their opponents. These bodies are meant to protect the state, not to serve partisan interests,” he stressed.

Prof. Joseph Osafo expressed deep concern over recent reports of alleged surveillance, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests targeting activists, journalists, and opposition figures under the guise of national security operations.

“This is not the democracy we fought for. The politicization of security agencies erodes public trust and endangers the very foundations of our republic,” he cautioned.

He called on the leadership of both parties to respect the independence and neutrality of state institutions and to allow them to operate in the interest of national stability and peace.

Prof. Osafo further urged civil society, the media, and religious leaders to remain vigilant and speak out against any abuse of power, especially as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
