The German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and Bayer AG, a global enterprise, have launched a Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign in Ghana themed ‘Real Men ACT’ in Accra.

The campaign, which is being executed by The Little Cow Consulting Limited, seeks to bring issues to light on the issues of prostate disease and conscientise men to focus on and settle on informed conclusions about their health.

The campaign also looks to change the scene of prostate cancer detection and treatment in the country.

The CEO at the Little Cow Consulting Limited, Abdul-Nasser Alidu, said that the project is looking at reducing avoidable mortality and bleakness connected with prostate cancer growth.

The campaign, according to the chief executive officer, aims to raise awareness among men and educate gatekeepers about the disease’s risk factors and preventative measures.

“We are looking generally at men aged 55 and above as well as gatekeepers such as the pharmacist, health care practitioners and traditional healers since our research shows that knowledge about prostate cancer among gatekeepers is low,” he explained.

He continued that the campaign will be steered in eight decisively picked regions within Accra, and the districts are Accra Metropolitan, Ayawaso East, Weija-Gbawe, Ga West, Shai Osudoku, Ashiaman, Kpone Katamanso, and Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LeKMA).

“Hopefully, if it is successful and we can raise the needed awareness, then we can get the campaign funded to be expanded for the whole country,” he said.

Mr Abdul-Nasser Alidu added that the districts were picked on the grounds that they have an exceptional and more extensive populace in the entire region of Accra. The discussions will start on radio and TV as well as a tour to partners as a feature of the creation of awareness.

He further encouraged all men to treat the testing of their prostate in a serious way as the tales of individuals who have encountered prostate cancer growth are frightening.

A Urologist and Kidney Relocate Specialist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Isaac Asiedu, said that prostate cancer growth is the second most common disease. He expressed that this is because of the absence of awareness about the risk factors, side effects and significance of early recognition of the disease among the male populace.

He indicated that there is also a lack of knowledge among community pharmacists and traditional healers as first points of contact for parts of the target group to interpret symptoms properly and make referrals to nearby health facilities.

He therefore noted that an increased awareness and improved access will result in improved early diagnosis in the selected communities in the Greater Accra Region.

The project has Reggie Rockstone as its campaign ambassador, who will use his voice to bring issues to light of the cancer. Reggie Rockstone encouraged men to get screened since a basic test can save their lives.
