Lothar Matthäus and Oliver Kahn, two of Germany’s greatest soccer players, have responded to Antonio Rüdiger’s recent actions during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. Interestingly, their opinions on Rüdiger’s conduct throughout the game differ.
The player’s actions during last Saturday’s Copa del Rey final loss to Barcelona sparked a lot of reactions.
Oliver Kahn and Lothar Matthäus have also responded to the incident.
Like everyone else in the stadium, Antonio Rüdiger was watching the game with great emotion after being substituted out in the 111th minute of the final against Barcelona.
However, when Rüdiger lost control of his emotions and threw his cooling pack on the field and in the referee’s direction, the referee made a mistaken call.
This move has drawn harsh criticism from fans around the world including German football fans and commentators.
Lothar Matthäus shared his thoughts on this:
“Antonio Rüdiger’s behaviour was absolutely unacceptable, I’ve never seen that before. […] I think this must have consequences, even within the national team, regardless of his sporting value to the team”
Oliver Kahn, a former teammate who was frequently referred to as a “aggressive leader” while he was playing, responded in a different way with a message on his own Twitter/X account:
“Emotions on the pitch are not always helpful. But who doesn’t overshoot the mark sometimes. Rüdiger has shown insight. That should be enough for now.”
Rüdiger sustained a knee injury in the game against Barcelona and will miss the rest of the season.
He has also been punished with a lengthy ban, which currently accumulates to 12 games.
