Due to the catastrophic effects of illicit mining, or galamsey, on the environment and society, media personality and lawyer Samson Lardy Anyenini has called on the government of Ghana to impose a state of emergency in order to address the growing problem.
Anyenini stresses that urgent and drastic action is necessary due to the seriousness of the galamsey threat. By declaring a state of emergency, authorities would have the increased capacity to take decisive action.
Speaking recently on his television program “Samson’s Take,” he said immediate action is required to stop additional environmental and social harm and that the time for discussion is over.
Galamsey operations have seriously destroyed forest reserves and contaminated waterways, endangering biodiversity and the means of subsistence for populations that rely on these resources.
Recent court rulings have weakened enforcement efforts and provoked public outrage, such as the Enchi District Court’s order to return confiscated excavators to suspected illegal miners.
