Politician and public figure Sammy Awuku has made a rather striking statement regarding how the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) could show appreciation to its supporters.
Speaking on Kwame Sefa Kayi’s Kokrokoo morning show on Peace FM, Awuku said the NDC government should be able to transport about 20,000 of its loyal supporters to the United States to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to him, such a gesture would serve as a way of saying “thank you” to the grassroots members who stood firmly behind the party and voted massively to bring it to power.
“If the NDC truly values its supporters, they should be able to sponsor at least 20,000 of them to go and watch the World Cup in the U.S. It’s the least they can do for their loyalty,” Awuku said.
According to him, this is not propaganda, as some have said, because in 2018, if Ghana had qualified to the World Cup in Russia, the NPP was only interested in doing the same.
He added that the party’s leadership must demonstrate gratitude in tangible ways, especially to those who campaigned and voted tirelessly during the elections.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament is expected to draw millions of fans from across the world, including a large number from Africa.

While some listeners found Awuku’s comment humorous, others took it as a jab at the ruling party, suggesting it highlights the tendency of Ghanaian politicians to make exaggerated promises or proposals.
The NDC is yet to respond to Awuku’s remarks.
