Spain Will Officially Terminate Its Golden Visa Program This Year

Prior to its official termination on April 3, 2025, wealthy foreign nationals are still able to apply for Spain’s Golden Visa Program. The program’s termination was announced in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) on January 3, 2025, and it will go into effect three months later.

The Congress of Deputies in Spain approved the elimination of the Golden Visa Program in December 2024, and non-EU nationals who wish to apply for residency in Spain through the Golden Visa Program have until April 3, 2025, to do so.

The Golden Visa Program was approved by the Spanish Congress of Deputies in December of that year, with the proposal passed with 177 votes in favour and 170 against.

Spain formally confirmed the program’s termination on January 3, 2025. This means that until April 3, 2025, wealthy investors from non-EU nations will be able to purchase a property valued at €500,000 or more in exchange for a golden visa, the program’s most well-known option, or select other options.

The regulation first passed the Spanish Congress of Deputies on November 14 and proceeded to the Senate through the plenary process. However, the bill to end the Golden Visa Program was rejected by the Spanish Senate on December 2, 2024.

Plans to end the Golden Visa Program were announced by Spanish authorities in April 2024, with the President Pedro Sanchez, emphasizing that his nation would take all necessary steps to guarantee that housing is a right rather than just a speculative venture.

In an effort to better handle the housing crisis the nation is facing, Spain decided to discontinue its Golden Visa Program.
