Stephen Appiah

Stephen Leroy Appiah, 43, is an easily recognized name both in Ghana and in Italy. “Tornado” Appiah was one of the most prolific midfielders in his playing days and was once ranked among the best midfielders in the world.

Appiah played for a number of world-class teams in Italy, including: Udinese, Parma, Brescia, Juventus and Fenerbahçe, Bologna and a few other top clubs.

Apart from his club, Appiah also rose through the positions playing for Ghana’s national youth teams including the U-17, U-20, U-23 and finally ended up as the skipper for his country’s senior national team — the Black Stars.

As a matter of fact, he has a track record of being one of the best national team captains Ghana has had. In Germany in 2006, he led the Black Stars to their first FIFA World Cup campaign.

Under the leadership of “Tornado,” the Black Stars continued to bring glory to the nation until his exit.

In Ghana, where he grew up and started his football career, he is still highly regarded as a great leader and a uniter even after he retired.

With this multitude of honors, Stephen Appiah has always remembered his foundations, and where he started from as a professional football player.

“ill Capitano,” as some fans refer to him, recently expressed his gratitude to his parents for bringing him into the world and for the incredible contributions they have made to his successful football career since 1995.

Appiah recalled the first pair of boots his parents gave him, which helped him start his football career dream. He was unable to hide his happiness and appreciation for his parents who supported him when he began. He posted on social media:

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. Your support came at a time when I needed it most. Your care & that first pair of boots will always be part of my story. Those boots weren’t just shoes, they were the start of a dream. Thank you for everything Ataa Ago & Sister Aryeekaa”
