Amber Valletta, an American supermodel who also serves as the brand’s sustainability ambassador, talks about her relationship with Karl Lagerfeld ahead of the Met Gala, which will honor his fashion legacy.
As indicated by Amber Valletta, she actually considers Karl Lagerfeld to be an ‘Emperor of Fashion’. In fact, Karl booked Amber for all three brands during the same 1993 season.
Additionally, she had the impression that she already knew him, though not personally. The supermodel thinks Karl was an iconic individual, despite the fact that she didn’t know much about fashion at the time.
One of the few fashion emperors who was so interested in this industry was Karl. As a result, when Amber first met him in Paris, his manner of asking questions left her speechless.
Karl had such a lot of energy, and that truly came through during his fashion shows. “We would all end up stacked on the runway as a result of him sometimes completely disregarding whoever was in charge of sending the models onto the catwalk while he was backstage”, amber said.
He possessed a certain level of spontaneous improvisation that is much less common these days and only adored that immediateness. Karl was able to do things that most designers couldn’t because he had such self-assurance and talent. He had no fear.
Janet Afi Adzie: All You Need To Know About The Supermodel
Karl Largerfeld looked like a royal being, not in the sense that he was superior to others, but rather because he was just unique. Karl was more than just a fashion designer; he was more than that. You always felt like you were inside his court, as opposed to just working with him.
“I recently saw an image of myself on the Chanel autumn/winter 1993-1994 runway, and the outfit that I’m wearing is so modern. My hair is super short and I’m wearing these teeny tiny The Matrix-style sunglasses that everybody would wear today, and carrying a quilted leather hot water bottle. Chanel could have been so classic and traditional, and Karl really flipped that concept around. I still have some of the candy-coloured knitted sweaters from that collection… I have to find a way to recreate that outfit.”
“Around nine years ago, I spoke to Karl about collaborating on a sustainable capsule collection together. He gave me the green light, but for logistical reasons we couldn’t make it happen. We put it to the side and I continued to have conversations with Pier Paolo Righi, the visionary CEO of Karl Lagerfeld, and to see Karl when I was in Paris.
“After Karl passed away, Pier Paolo reached out to me and explained they were ready to work on something with me, and for me to be part of the brand’s legacy moving forward. It has been an amazing opportunity since, and the relationship has developed into something much deeper than I ever could have imagined”.
“Today, I remain so grateful and honoured to be the sustainability ambassador for the whole Karl Lagerfeld brand. We have quarterly meetings, looking at everything from CO2 emissions and sustainable materials to manufacturing locations”.
“It’s inspiring that the Karl Lagerfeld brand is willing to look at itself, create goals and work on delivering more sustainable fashion – I’m here to support them with that. Most importantly, knowing we’d been given Karl’s blessing gives all of us infinite motivation. I believe that he would be really proud of the work we are doing together!”
