The Betrayal, Bad Friends And More: Gloria Sarfo Shares..

Gloria Sarfo

A few days ago, Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo criticized the organizers of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for disrespecting Ghanaian filmmakers, after leaving them out of frustration at the airport whilst they were on a trip to attend the event in Nigeria.

According to Gloria, the trip was an all-expenses paid trip to Lagos, for the 2024 awards ceremony, but when they got to the airport, it turned out to be a sham— their plane tickets were invalid. Gloria and her colleagues were left in a state of frustration and shame.

In a social media post, Gloria explained that she and other prominent Ghanaian actors, including veteran filmmakers Abdul Salam Mumuni, Akorfa Edjeani Asiedu and Julia Apea, had to wait for hours at airport without support or clear communication from the organizers.

“This was a total embarrassment,” Sarfo lamented, describing how they had to inform other Ghanaian attendees en route to the airport to turn back to avoid the same fate.

The actor also expressed her dismay at what she perceived as the unequal treatment between Ghanaians and Nigerians in the entertainment industry, noting that Nigerians invited to Ghana are often treated well.

After expressing her displeasure, AMAA organizers granted an interview to deny the claim, and later apologized. However, Gloria is still not happy with the apology because she feels that it is not for her but for the entire Ghanaian film industry.

In addition, Gloria said she was very disappointed in some of her colleagues who took time off work to attend the event despite the embarrassment they experienced.

She revealed that, since her outburst, she has received many calls from movie colleagues who make it seem she is a bad person.

Speaking to Nana Romeo on Accra FM on Thursday, November 8, Gloria Sarfo said she was shocked by the hypocrisy in the movie industry.

Gloria said she has been supportive for many of her colleagues in the industry, but now she sees things differently.

“I have known who my friends really are, who my colleagues are and the so called ones whom I thought we have one goal together “

“I learned a lot. I’m not a brand killer, so I don’t want to mention names. No, I won’t do that, but I’m sending this message to hit where it might concern. But there is one person in particular who has surprised me a lot.”

According to Gloria, there was a problem with one of the AMVCA Awards nominations a few years ago, and this person was involved in it. Gloria had to make calls, be assertive about it, and step in to fix the problem so that this person can move on.

“Interestingly, the person I was fighting for didn’t even say a word. I was doing everything I could to solve the problem, as if there was nothing I could do. But when I spoke to her on the side, she tells me: people have advised me to leave that and blah blah blah! But I risked my reputation to do this for her. I thought she deserved some clarity.”

But when this latest airport issue came up, she is silent. She even called directing me to do something that would rather ruin my reputation, instead; make someone happy, which I did not heed to it. “

Gloria added that she is fighting for the industry but the same people are fighting her.

“This is really an industry not worth fighting for. I thought I had good friends. It would be hard for me to support my colleagues individually right now.”

Gloria concluded by saying that all she wants is for the organizers of the AMAA Awards to publicly apologize to the industry.

“Let’s say, a statement or a press release to all the Ghanaian film industry for what they got us through at the airport”.
