The Deadline For Revoking Unsurrendered Diplomatic Passports Is Approaching

The Ghanaian government has declared its intention to revoke any diplomatic and service passports that were not relinquished by the previous government.

The deadline for returning these passports to the Legal and Treaties Bureau has been set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at March 17, 2025. The passports will be canceled and placed on the Stop-Watch List if they do not comply, which will result in their seizure at all Ghanaian entrance and departure points.

This move comes after 404 diplomatic and 387 service passports that were not returned were found in an initial recall letter that was sent out on January 15, 2025.

Those affected include:

Former Ministers and their spouses, Former Members of Parliament, Former Council of State members and their spouses, Retired Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts, Former Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, Officials of State Institutions, Board Chairs and Members, Officials associated with the National Cathedral Project, Former political ambassadors and their dependents, Businessmen, entrepreneurs, and former government functionaries.

The Cost Of Applying For A Passport To Go Down

In accordance with the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967 (NLCD 155), which requires the surrender of official passports upon ceasing to hold valid positions, the Ministry stresses that all passports falling under these categories must be turned in by the deadline in order to prevent cancellation and blacklisting.
