The First African American Librarian Of Congress, Sacked By Trump

President Donald Trump has sacked Carla Hayden, the first African American and woman to hold the office of Congress Librarian.

A copy of Carla’s termination email that was obtained shows that she was relieved of her duties on Thursday, May 8.

Trent Morse, the deputy director of presidential personnel, wrote the following in the email addressed to Hayden:

“On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately.”

Democrats in Congress were given access to the email.

The email alerting library staff about Hayden’s termination was sent by Principal Deputy Librarian Robert Newlen. According to the report, Newlen would “take on the responsibilities of acting Librarian of Congress until further direction.”

Carla has been removed of her duties, according to a Library of Congress official who later confirmed Hayden’s departure.

Hayden was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2016 and approved by the Senate in July 2016 by a bipartisan vote of 74-18. Hayden is the 14th Librarian of Congress in the 225-year history of the institution.

Obama referred to the fact that she was the first African American and woman to hold the position as “long overdue.” Additionally, Obama signed a measure in 2015 establishing a 10-year term for the Librarian of Congress, making her the first Librarian of Congress to hold the job without a lifetime appointment. Next year was when her term was supposed to end.

Hayden served as the CEO of Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library prior to her appointment as Librarian of Congress.

She described her efforts to significantly modernize and optimize the library’s systems, procedures, and personnel in testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday morning and the House Administration Committee that afternoon.

Following Cameron Hamilton’s dismissal as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s temporary director this week, she is the second official to testify before being fired.

The top Democrat on the House Administration Committee, which is in charge of the Library of Congress, Rep. Joe Morelle of New York, has blasted Trump for unfairly targeting a public servant in his criticism of Hayden’s termination.

“The Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, has spent her entire career serving people — from helping kids learn to read to protecting some of nation’s most precious treasures. She is an American hero,” Morelle said in a statement, adding that he plans to introduce legislation to “guarantee that the Librarian of Congress is appointed by Congress.”

Morelle called Trump’s decision “ignorant” and said it “will impact America’s libraries, our copyrighted economic interests, and service to the American people.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. And several others have called for congressional intervention.

The American Accountability Foundation, a conservative nonprofit organization, has also been attacking Hayden lately, calling her “woke” and saying she advocated for access to books about “radical gender identity.”

The organization applauded Trump’s decision to fire Hayden.
