Today, Monday, April 28, 2025, Ghana officially introduces the e-passport, a new chip-embedded biometric passport that will be issued nationwide. This major update brings Ghana into compliance with international travel document requirements, improves security, and expedites the application process.

• You won’t be charged extra for the courier delivery of your chip-embedded passports
• Passport officials will be sanctioned if they do not ensure your passport is delivered under 15 days
• Ghana Post is the lead courier service provider. Ghana Post’s presence across the country will allow for Ghanaians with address challenges to pick up their chip-embedded passports at the nearest Ghana Post Office;
• The 24-Hour Passport Operations and Courier Services will create more jobs
• All these reforms are happening under reduced passport application fees
• The cost of these reforms is being taken care of by the reduced passport application fees under a PPP arrangement so the Ghanaian taxpayer has not been burdened with any additional contract
• The new security-enhanced chip-embedded passports will make Ghana compliant with requirements from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to ICAO, the current passports will be obsolete by 2030.

Cultural Design Elements: The passport’s design reflects Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, featuring Adinkra symbols like “Fawohodie” (Freedom and Independence) and “Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu” (Democracy and Cooperation).
Streamlined Application: The process has been made more accessible, with the elimination of middlemen to reduce exploitation and improve transparency.
Courier Delivery: Applicants will not incur additional charges for courier delivery of their passports, enhancing convenience.

Existing valid biometric passports remain valid until their expiration dates. However, citizens are encouraged to upgrade to the new chip-embedded passports to benefit from enhanced security features and global recognition.
