Idris Elba has revealed that he and Prince Harry became friends after saying: ‘Yo’ to each other in nightclubs.
The actor and DJ was speaking to Smartless podcast when he revealed this.
‘I was DJ-ing in all these clubs where Harry would show up and he was like “Yo!” and I’m like “Yo!” And then at one point he was like, “Listen man, I’m getting married.” I was like, “Yo! That’s amazing.”
‘He goes, “I want you to DJ.”‘ Harry went on to make a request. ‘I was like, “I don’t do requests!”‘ Elba recalled.
He then attended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in May 2018, and he did DJ at the reception afterwards at Frogmore House.
Idris Elba, who has performed at Ibiza nightclubs and festivals and has had a highly successful career in the music industry, even revealed who the best dancer at the party was in March 2023.
The actor is very famous in the music business having played at Ibiza clubs and festivals, and was the DJ at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018.
Elba previously stated that the 41-year-old Duchess gave him a list of all the songs that would be played on the big day.
Harry and Meghan secured the bunch before millions overall at St George’s sanctuary inside the grounds of Windsor Palace on May 19 2018.
The Beckhams, George Clooney, and Oprah Winfrey were among the celebrity guests who were present at the wedding, in addition to their families.
Idris admitted in an earlier interview that when Prince Harry offered him the job, he thought he was “joking.”
On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he explained how the Duke offered him the position, saying,
“So Harry and I have hung out a couple of times through his dad’s [Prince Charles] charity – The Prince’s Trust – which helped me out when I was a young actor”.
‘Harry came to a couple of parties that I DJed and he was like, “What are you doing on [May 19]?”‘
The actor explained that when he was approached for the coveted role, he was taken aback:
‘I told him nothing and then he asked if I would DJ at his wedding… I was like is this a joke?’
‘That was an incredible experience. I was curating the music for that night, so it was a lot of pressure, but it was great. A vibe.’
Among Meghan’s mentioned songs for the occasion were Still by Dr Dre and the classic by Whitney Houston, I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Several images from their wedding album were shared by Harry and Meghan in their Netflix series.
In a clip about the 2018 reception Meghan said: ‘I just really wanted the music to be fun. Even our first dance.’
She turns to her husband and asks: ‘Song of 1,000 Dances? A thousand dances? I always get it wrong.’
The Duchess sings lyrics from the 60s soul hit Land Of A Thousand Dances, which the couple chose for their first dance. It was the first time they publicly acknowledged which song they were listening to.
Snaps from the wedding showed Meghan and Harry whirling around on the dancefloor, as well as boogying with companions from their ritzy list of attendees.
