The Lost Love And Respect For Values And Traditions Is Due To Uncontrolled Social Media – Asantehene

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has stated that social media is a factor that contributes to the erosion of cultural values and the sense of patriotism among Ghanaian youth.

He says that when it comes to commitment to values and country, the uncontrolled nature of social media and the digital landscape is a big problem.

“There is what for me, is the overriding issue of the sense of civic responsibility of our young generation. We cannot deny the harmful influences to which our youth are exposed not only in the digital space but within our communities and homes”.

“It is difficult to identify anything that today instils in our youth, the love of country and service to the community, the value of our cultures and traditions buttressed by the wisdom of our forefathers are being sacrificed for inappropriate offerings from an uncontrolled social media.”

Otumfuo emphasized that while digital spaces provide youth with a wealth of opportunities, they are also awash in criminal activity, abuse, and distractions that must be monitored.

“There are danger signs that many of our young people have been drawn into. The net of cybercrimes and moral degeneracy. It is a sign we must address with real valour. The nature of digital space should not delude us into thinking that there is an easy path to wealth and prosperity. The easy path leading inevitably to ruin and destruction.”

His Majesty is of the opinion that education and coordinated efforts from educators, parents, and colleges can help right the wrongs.

The statement was made by Otumfuo when he gave the keynote address at the 2024 SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College Graduation Ceremony on June 8, 2024.

The event was held under the theme “Empowering African Young People for the Future, Cultivating Academic Excellence and Hope Through Pan African Education.”
