Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has declared a national campaign to stop galamsey, or unlawful mining.
IGP Yohuno emphasized the serious security threats that illegal mining poses, especially in forest reserves and mining villages, during his remarks at the Regional Command Conference held at the Police Headquarters on Friday, March 21, 2025.
He pointed out that the situation has gotten worse in places like the Western North, where armed criminals have attacked defenseless bystanders and forest guards.
Illegal mining is a security risk, especially in our forest reserves and mining towns, according to the IGP. He said, in regions like the Western North and many others, armed criminals have carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, including forest guards without justification.
“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
