Today, Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Accra, Ghana, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) formally began celebrating its Golden Jubilee. This ceremony kicks off a year-long celebration of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary, which will highlight the organization’s accomplishments in regional development and integration since its founding in Lagos, Nigeria, on May 28, 1975.
Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and dignitaries from ECOWAS member states attended the launch ceremony, which was held at the Accra International Conference Centre. Notably, Ghana’s President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presided over the ceremony, with the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, also in attendance.
Along with artistic and cultural performances that narrated the organization’s history, reforms, and significant accomplishments among member states, the event included the introduction of the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee logo and theme.
Despite their recent exit from the organization in January 2025, invitations were sent to the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger in keeping with ECOWAS’s commitment to regional unity.
