British tennis player Emma Raducanu was involved in a troubling situation at the Dubai Tennis Championships with a man who was displaying “fixated behavior.”
The man had approached Raducanu at a café and given her a letter before her match against Karolina Muchova in the second round. She later had severe emotional pain when she saw him in the crowd during her match.
The 22-year-old explained how she felt when she saw the guy:
“I saw him in the first game of the match and I was like, I don’t know how I’m going to finish. I literally couldn’t see the ball through tears. I could barely breathe. I was very distraught”.
After the second game, Raducanu, who was clearly angry, went to the chair umpire to voice her worries. The individual was then taken out of the stadium by security guards, and Dubai police took him into custody. He was prohibited from going to any further WTA events and signed a pledge to keep his distance from Raducanu.
Raducanu proceeded with the match in spite of the incident, but Muchova won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. After a short break to recuperate from the emotional ordeal, she returned to participate at the Indian Wells Open, where stricter security measures were put in place to protect her.
Raducanu had already experienced stalking. After visiting her family’s home in 2021, a man was given a five-year restraining order.

The safety and wellbeing of well-known athletes have been questioned in light of these instances, underscoring the necessity of strict security measures.
The 2021 US Open champion was speaking to media ahead of the start of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where she will return to action for the first time since the ordeal.
The incident occurred early in the first set of the Muchova match. She regrouped to play on after the man was removed from the arena but lost 7-6 6-4.
