
Ghana’s Premier University, the University of Ghana’s Confucius Institute hosted its 15th UN Chinese Language Day celebration themed, “Chinese Language: Connecting Cultures through the Bridge of Mutual Learning“.
Professor Clement Appah, the Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute, emphasised the significance of language, highlighting its role in bringing people together, facilitating businesses and enabling relationships during his speech at the event.
According to Professor Appah, the UN International Day of the Chinese Language fills in as a sign of the huge significance of the Chinese language, which is the single biggest language on the planet.
He added that the Chinese language empowers us to learn from one another, focusing on that China brings a lot to the table for the world and is effectively doing as such. The pathway to getting to these contributions, he said, is through learning the Chinese language.
He also expressed his hope that this celebration would inspire people, especially children to learn the Chinese language.
On the historical backdrop of the Day, Mr. Joseph Oduro Nkansah, Secretary for the College of Education, who represented the Registrar, gave a short history of the UN Chinese Language Day which was laid out in 2010.

He dug into the college’s acknowledgment of the significance of variety and its impact on friendly consideration processes. He further featured the University’s affirmation of the commitments of the Chinese language in forming civilisations.
Mr. Nkansah finished up by stretching out the University’s felicitations to the UN for advancing initiatives that embrace variety.
Speaking at the event, Lu Min Zhao, Acting Chief of the Political Section of the Chinese Embassy, pointed out that the UN designated April 20, as International Chinese Language Day to promote cultural diversity and engagement.
He remarked that over the years, International Chinese Language Day has yielded tangible results and enhanced cultural values, boosting global ties and friendships.
There were Chinese proficiency and culture competitions at the elementary and university levels during the celebration.
In attendance were Prof. Wang Jimin, Chinese Director, Confucius Institute, UG; H.E. Anani Demuyakor, Ghana’s former Ambassador to China as well as staff and students of the University.
