The Tonga Football Association has notified FIFA regarding its decision to pull out from the OFC preliminary competition for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ as a result of the new natural disaster that has desolated the region.
Tonga had been set up to contend with the Cook Islands in a single- legged qualifying match to conclude who might procure the option to feature in Group A of the preliminary competition.
The winners of the preliminary competition, which is set to be staged in Qatar, will represent Oceania in the intercontinental play-offs.
The withdrawal of Tonga implies that the qualifying match, which was planned for 13 March, won’t happen and the Cook Islands will rather automatically join the Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Vanuatu in Group A.
Tonga is located on the north coast of the island of Tongatapu, in the country’s southernmost island group.
