The Youth Of Tema Demonstrate Against Ebi Bright’s Appointment As Mayor. This Is The Reason

Ebi Bright

The alleged selection of Ebi Bright as the next mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly has sparked demonstrations from the city’s youth. Their main issue, which highlights the need of cultural awareness and community representation, is the desire for a local indigenous person to serve as mayor.

A representative for the young people who were protesting, Dora Sappor, explained their position.

“We are here with a heavy heart to register our displeasure. We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the Mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen. She was not even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her to be the mayor? This is something we will not understand.”

The protesters contend that the community’s voice and the advice of the traditional leadership are compromised by the appointment of an outsider who was not part in the original selection process. They think a mayor with strong ties to Tema would be more aware of the issues facing the city and more equipped to deal with them.

In order to raise awareness of their objectives, the protests have been characterized by symbolic acts such as drumming and burning automobile tires. President John Dramani Mahama has been urged by the young to reevaluate the appointment and give preference to a candidate who shares the goals and values of the society.
