When Julian Nagelsmann, the coach of Germany’s national team, called 28-year-old midfielder Nadiem Amiri of 1. FSV Mainz 05 to tell him he had been selected for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League quarterfinal matchup against Italy, Amiri broke down in tears.
Amiri has not played for the national team since November 2020, so this selection represents his comeback after about four and a half years.
With deep emotion, Amiri said:
“After I received the call from the head coach on Tuesday, I was brought to tears.” He further shared, “It has been my dream for so long to play for the national team again. I have worked hard and tried to improve every day.”
Coach Nagelsmann commended Amiri for his exceptional play this season, pointing out that he is a prime example of how tenacity and commitment can advance a person’s career.
