This Is The Reason Why Mali’s President Could Be In Office Until 2030 Without An Election

Assimi Goita, President of Mali

Since May 28, 2021, Assimi Goita, the president of Mali, has presided over the transitional administration. Despite never having been elected by the Malian people, he is currently expected to stay in this position until at least 2030.

Goita, who came to power after two military takeovers in 2020 and 2021, was given political support by important allies last month to hold onto power for an extended period of time.

Additionally, a measure that would make his mandate “renewable” and extend it until at least 2030 was adopted by the Malian Council of Ministers on Wednesday.

Until anything changes, Goita would continue to lead the government despite not having been elected by the people.

Political elections have not been held or declared, despite Goita and the military junta’s initial pledge to hand over authority to civil society by the end of 2024.

The National Transitional Council would have to review the law for the time being.
