According to Yaw Adomako Baafi, the former director of New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications, some MPs from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) do not frequently attend parliamentary sessions because they have trouble speaking English.
He claims that some NDC MPs incapacity to speak English fluently prevents them from actively participating in legislative discussions and activities. In an interview with Wontumi FM, he voiced these comments and criticized the opposition for what he called a lack of preparation and sincerity in parliamentary work.
Baafi underlined that as English is the official language of all proceedings, Members of Parliament must be eloquent and knowledgeable in the language. Parliament is a forum for serious legislative work. He asserted that some NDC MPs’ apparent absenteeism can be partially explained by this language barrier.
The remark has generated discussion among people and political pundits, with some calling it divisive and others calling for improved assistance and training for all MPs, regardless of party affiliation.
