This Year’s Africa Prosperity Dialogues Was Focused On Interoperability

Africa Prosperity Network held an international symposium titled “Africa Prosperity Dialogues” on July 5, 2024, in Accra at the Labadi Beach Hotel, to advance interoperability in Africa. The symposium addressed payment challenges to unlocking Africa’s economic potential.

The event, which was organized in conjunction with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), was themed as follows: “Scaling Up Interoperability: Using Mobile Money to Buy & Sell Across Africa.”

The Symposium on Interoperability brought together all stakeholders in the value chain, including banking, political leaders, the telecommunications industry, and others, to discuss the idea of interoperability and precisely what the continent must do to make it a reality.

Promoting Africa’s economic integration and prosperity was the primary focus of the event. In addition, it emphasized the significance of Africa’s adoption of interoperable payment system infrastructure and the promotion of financial inclusion on the continent.

Mobile interoperability is a crucial component of Africa’s payment infrastructure and has the potential to significantly improve cross-border payments across the continent. Interoperability has the potential to deliver the opportunities necessary for prosperity in Africa. Market fragmentation persists despite efforts to integrate the region, putting economic activities at risk.

Cross-border trade in Africa is still hampered by non-tariff barriers that raise transaction costs and restrict market access. Millions of Africans remain outside of the formal financial system, making it difficult for them to save, invest, and conduct business effectively.

An interconnected economy requires mobile interoperability, which includes cross-border mobile roaming and mobile money exchange.

The integration of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) could link telecom companies with commercial and central banks, boosting liquidity and currency stability. In 2022, mobile money transactions in Africa reached $1.26 trillion, underscoring the economic impact of digital currencies.

The Africa Prosperity Dialogues are run by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN), a project that aims to establish partnerships between African political and business leaders, civil society, academia, and traditional authorities.

They advance the concept of “The Africa We Want.” The symposium’s goal was to promote dialogue and consensus-building on issues related to trade, commerce, and the development of African economies.

Every year, African leaders from diverse areas of national endeavors gather at the APD, a one-of-a-kind event, to accelerate the implementation of agreed-upon initiatives within the AfCFTA trade bloc and shape the Africa Agenda for Action.

In order to realize the vision of Africa Beyond Aid, APD brings the continent’s critical challenges and industrialization priorities into practical focus and accelerates commercial and infrastructure interventions. Every year, the APD hosts a conference.
