Thousands Of Nurses Are Leaving Ghana For Better Remunerations

According to records provided by the Ghana Health Service, a total of 3,688 health personnel have left the country in search of greener pastures over the course of the past three years.

According to the Ghana Health Service, this number includes both critical and professional caregivers.

The records expresses that some health experts leaving the country have refered to poor working conditions in Ghana as the justification behind clearing their situations to look for greener fields abroad.

The Best Ghanaian Nurses Are Relocating To The UK

As part of efforts to address the troubling issue, the Ghana Health Service stated that it had revised and doubled study leave for unprofessional nurses as early as 2021. It anticipates that the majority of these unprofessional nurses who took advantage of it will be qualified to fill the void by the middle of next year.

However, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, while debating on the Health Ministry’s 2024 budget, said the government must consider an increment in remuneration to deal with the trend.

“Mr. Speaker, I think that we should look at the remuneration [of nurses]. If we look at the compensation, it was over and above what was allocated and if people have left, the compensation should then climb up. We should do a proper audit of the nurses who have left to know the deficit and should be able to employ to replace those who have exited.”
