Tyla, a Grammy-winning, South African-born singer, has found herself at the center of a racial controversy that has been bubbling for some time. During a recent interview, the singer decided to plead the fifth.
Fans discovered a TikTok video that Tyla had made years before her “Water” song became a worldwide hit and a double platinum smash. In it, she celebrated her mixed heritage and referred to herself as a “proud coloured South African woman.”
Tyla was given the opportunity to elaborate on the remark during the interview, but she resisted and her publicist requested that the question be omitted from the interview.
A Big Plaudit From South Africa’s President To Grammy Winner Tyla
Black American fans felt that Tyla lacked understanding of why the term “coloured” is no longer a part of this country’s culture. In fact, Tyla’s silence did her no favors.
Tyla issued a statement in response to the growing controversy, stating that she had simply chosen to embrace her diversity rather than deny her Blackness.
The 22-year-old claims that in addition to being Zulu, she also carries Irish, Indian, and other blood in her veins. She claims that in her home country, that is referred to as “colored,” but she is aware that in this nation, it means that she is Black, and she does not object to that.
Meanwhile, Tyla is scheduled to perform at the BET Awards and Rolling Loud Thailand this year.
