It’s interesting to note that despite being best friends for nearly two decades, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey have never collaborated on a movie.
But Perry was given the chance to helm Oprah Winfrey’s most recent Netflix movie, “The Six Triple Eight.”
Perry is directing the cultural icon for the first time.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only unit of Black and women of color to serve in Europe during World War II, is the subject of the film’s untold story.
By sorting through a three-year backlog of mail (17 million pieces), the 855 women who were known as the “Six Triple Eight” made a crucial contribution to the war effort and significantly raised morale.
While Oprah Winfrey plays renowned activist, educator, and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune, who was significant in the Roosevelt Administration and fought for Black women in the military, Kerry Washington plays the troop’s commander, Major Charity Adams.
Another comment regarding Oprah Winfrey on the movie came from programmer Kaleem Aftab:
“I had to find the right thing for her,” Perry revealed in an interview at the film’s press junket on Tuesday. All these years we’ve been friends, I knew we’d work together at some point, but I wanted to find something that was worthy of her. Because she’s not a Madea kind of girl. I don’t see her sitting there with Madea having a conversation.”
The Los Angeles premiere of “The Six Triple Eight” took place on December 3.
Before his success as a playwright turned into a successful movie and television career, Michael Buckner Perry made his first appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2001. With popular shows like “The Haves and Have Nots,” he played a crucial role in the early days of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
But as he started working on the historic project that would be his 25th feature film, “Six Triple Eight,” he knew it was time to call Winfrey.

Oprah discussed his role in the movie and how she’s temporarily confined to the screens during Tuesday night’s red carpet premiere of “The Six Triple Eight.”
“Never say never,” Winfrey replied as she was whisked to her seat at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
On December 6, “The Six Triple Eight” made its theatrical debut. On December 20, it will be available for streaming on Netflix.
