Top scorers:
Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy and Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona end the league phase as joint-top scorers with nine goals each.
Lewandowski was out on his own as top scorer for the majority of the league phase, with the Polish international netting two penalties in Barcelona’s dramatic 5-4 win against Benfica on Matchday 7 to add to his tally and move clear at the summit.
However, Guirassy caught up with a double of his own in Dortmund’s 3-1 Matchday 8 victory against Shakhtar, meaning the pair are neck and neck going into the knockout phase.
Barcelona’s Raphinha and Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior are lurking just behind the two frontrunners with eight and seven goals respectively, while a total of seven players are on six goals, including the likes of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres.
As the tournament moves closer to the pivotal stages, these results have had a big impact on the rankings. In order to guarantee advantageous draws in the next stage, teams are currently fighting for the top spots.
Meanwhile, Owen Hargreaves, a former England player, has voiced worries that Harry Kane’s hopes of winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich may be hampered by the team’s defensive flaws.
Also, Szczesny’s return to Barcelona has also been eventful, as he was sent off and gave up a penalty. Barcelona has maintained their competitiveness in the Champions League despite these obstacles thanks to their aggressive strategy.
