“The only thing missing is the signature,” Casales said of the 39-month deal, with the 67-year-old Bielsa expected in Montevideo within days.

In June 2023, as Uruguay are scheduled to play friendlies against Nicaragua and Cuba, Bielsa is likely to play his first games in charge. In the meantime, qualifying for the South American World Cup will begin in September.

Casales said, they are bringing in someone whom they know will leave them a legacy that goes beyond the 90 minutes of a match.

In the World Cup’s group stage in Qatar, Uruguay was eliminated.
