Visual Artists Deserve Better Spotlight—Rex Omar Advocates for Change

Rex Omar, coordinator for Black Star Experience, has emphasized the importance of promoting Ghanaian visual artists and painters.

He shared his thoughts on how Ghanaian painters have long been marginalized in an interview on Hitz FM. Rex believes that, as they are all involved in the creative sector, they ought to be promoted in order to support Ghana’s arts and culture.

“Ghanaian painters have been relegated to the background. We need to bring them to the limelight—our painters, our sculptors, visual artists. When we say aesthetics, we are looking at how you see Ghana, either through photography, painting, sculpture, or whatever it is,” he said.

Rex recommended promoting and enhancing these artists, assisting them in exporting their creations, and setting up shows to highlight Ghanaian art.

“Style is about design. The design aspect, the design approach through industrial design, through our architecture,” he added.

He drew attention to the fact that many Ghanaian structures are based on European models. Ghana could instead create structures that are a reflection of its distinct personality, culture, and environment.

“How have we been able to design this village-style of mud houses? We can modernise it… If we talk about style, that’s what we’re talking about,” he added.

Rex Omar’s vision for Ghanaian art and culture emphasizes the importance of exposing the nation’s artistic abilities in order to celebrate and promote their distinct talents and incorporating cultural heritage into modern design.
