WAFU U-20 Cup Of Nations: Ghana Beat Nigeria To Be Winners Of The Tournament

By defeating Nigeria in the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations final on Saturday, June 3, the Black Princesses of Ghana completed their host and win assignment.

After both teams scored goals within the first ninety minutes of play at the Baba Yara Stadium, the match went into penalty shootouts.

Ghana scored first in the first half when Stella Nyamekye converted a penalty kick after Comfort Owusu was fouled in the box. Ghana took the lead thanks to the midfielder’s fourth tournament goal.

In the second half, Ghana’s team under coach Yusif Basigi kept Nigeria at bay and maintained their lead, giving the impression of being very confident and ready to win.

However, a miscommunication between goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku and her defense gave the away team an equalizer with five minutes remaining in regulation.

Flourish Sabastine was able to capitalize on the confusion to bring her team level, but Georgina Ayisha Aoyem’s effort missed the crossbar once more.

Mary Amponsah scored the game-winning penalty, and Ghana’s Afi Amenyaku saved three of four kicks to secure the victory for the Black Princesses.
