The main purpose of human beings on earth depends on different perspectives—religious, philosophical, and personal.
From a Christian point of view, the primary purpose of human beings is to:
• Worship and glorify God – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
• Have a relationship with God – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.” (Matthew 22:37).
• Serve others and spread love – “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31).
• Fulfill God’s will and make disciples – “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19)
However, Philosophers have debated human purpose on earth for centuries, but the common themes include:
• Seeking knowledge and wisdom (Socrates: “The unexamined life is not worth living.”).
• Pursuing happiness and fulfillment (Aristotle’s concept of “eudaimonia” or a flourishing life)
• Creating meaning through relationships, achievements, and experiences.
• Existentialism – Humans create their own meaning through choices and actions (Jean-Paul Sartre).
• Eudaimonia – A life of purpose, virtue, and fulfillment (Aristotle).
• Hedonism – The pursuit of happiness and pleasure as the main goal of life.
But from a scientific and evolutionary standpoint, humans exist to:
• Survive and reproduce – ensuring the continuation of the species.
• Adapt and innovate – using intelligence to improve life and solve challenges.
• Contribute to society – advancing civilization through knowledge, culture, and technology.
Human Suffering And The Reasons God Ignores It
Each person ultimately defines their own purpose based on their beliefs, experiences, and passions. Some find purpose in family, career, helping others, personal growth, or spiritual devotion.
Whether viewed spiritually, philosophically, or scientifically, human existence has purpose and meaning. The real question is: What do you personally believe is your purpose on earth?
