Discussions have centered on Ernest Owusu Bempah’s affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in the wake of Atik Mohammed’s comments on Peace FM’s morning broadcast on April 22, 2025. Although the precise date of his official NPP membership is unknown, his political career shows a strong ties to the party’s customs.
The host of Peace FM’s Morning Show, Nana Yaw Kesse, stated on his show on April 22, 2025, that he has witnessed a few gurus making remarks on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia—as someone who will not be able to assist the party in the future.
The host claims that these comments follow the NPP presidential candidate’s nationwide Thank-You Tour. Speaking on the subject, Nana Yaw Kesse cited a few NPP gurus, such as Ernest Owusu Bempah, the party’s communications director, as individuals discussing Bawumia.
Interestingly, Atik Mohammed and Nana Akomea, who were guests on the show, thought it was offensive that the host called Ernest Owusu Bempah a party guru. Atik reacted:
“But when did Owusu Bempah join the NPP as a guru? For what reason do you call him a guru? When did he join the group to be referred to as a guru? Please, he is not one”.
Nana Akomea responded as well:
Who, Nana Yaw, is a guru? Well, let us go on to the next subject. I don’t want to carry on this conversation.
As the Communications Director for the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR), Owusu Bempah started his political activism with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Later, he was a key figure in the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVA) and co-founded the Alliance of Accountable Governance (AFAG), both of which supported the NPP’s objectives. Although his 2022 appointment as the NPP’s Deputy Communications Director raised questions about his commitment, his family’s longstanding connections to the party speak to a deeper bond. The fact that his father and uncles played a significant role in bringing the Danquah-Busia tradition to the Ashanti Region suggests that the NPP’s principles are deeply ingrained in his family.

It is conceivable that Owusu Bempah has been in line with the party’s principles for a considerable amount of time given his family’s multigenerational affiliation with the NPP and his active involvement in pro-NPP campaigns. His official appointment as the Deputy Communications Director in 2022 strengthened his standing in the party’s leadership.
Therefore, Owusu Bempah’s longstanding affiliation and contributions to the NPP justify his recognition as a significant figure within the party, even though the exact date of his official membership is still unknown.
