
Since Torkornoo’s suspension in April 2025, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the most senior justice on the Supreme Court has been acting as Chief Justice. He comes up as a probable candidate to be officially named the Chief Justice by President Mahama, pending the usual constitutional procedures of nomination, screening, and swearing-in.
President Mahama officially removed Gertrude Torkornoo on September 1, and several speculative candidates, including Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, have emerged to take her place.
These additional individuals are periodically brought up in conversations regarding the leadership of Ghana’s judiciary, even though Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is unquestionably the front-runner.
The five-member inquiry commission under Article 146 that examined the petition against Torkornoo included Justice Gabriel Pwamang. Although there is no official indication that he is being considered for the CJ job, his involvement in that process as a senior Supreme Court Justice has given him visibility.
Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu: He has a lengthy judicial career and has served as a Supreme Court (SC) justice since December 2022. Every now and again, he is brought up as one of the senior bench candidates for the CJ position.
Other names include Justice Mariama Owusu, who served until November 2024, and Justice George Kingsley Koomson, who was appointed in April 2023. They are among the members of the judicial leadership group under consideration.

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, on the other hand, is the most credible contender to become Chief Justice in the long run.
The final appointment will be made in accordance with Ghana’s constitutional procedures, which include official swearing-in, parliamentary ratification, and presidential nomination.
