According to Denzel Washington, he hasn’t tried out for a project in almost 40 years.

The admission was made by the Hollywood legend Denzel Washington, who most recently starred in Gladiator II as Macrinus, in an interview with BBC 1Xtra.

The 70-year-old clarified that he no longer has to prove himself at auditions after a significant turning point in his career—winning an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actor” for his portrayal of Private Silas Trip in Glory.

“It’s been about 40 years since I auditioned for a movie. I won an Academy Award in 1989, and I’m pretty sure no one has asked me to audition since then.”

Gladiator II was Washington’s most recent role. He had established himself as one of Hollywood’s most renowned actors by the time he received his second Academy Award for “Training Day” in 2001.

In addition to acting, Washington was baptized on Saturday, December 21, at the Kelly Temple in New York City, and he now holds his own minister’s license.
