Why Is The Government Now Deporting Foreigners Engaged In Illegal Mining But Previously Opposed It— Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea

On April 22, 2025, Nana Akomea, a well-known figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), spoke on Peace FM’s Morning Show and expressed disapproval of the current government’s intention to deport foreigners engaged in illegal mining.

He emphasized that during President Akufo-Addo’s administration, the same people who are currently carrying out these deportations had previously opposed them. Akomea questioned the reasons for the government’s current position and emphasized this change as a sign of political inconsistency.

Nana Akomea underlined that the then-opposition NDC, who are currently in power, spoke against the NPP’s attempts to stop illegal mining during its rule, including the expulsion of foreigners.

He voiced alarm about this seeming turnaround, arguing that it betrays a lack of coherence in policy and calls into question the legitimacy of the government’s resolve to combat illicit mining.
