Why Should You Deport Foreigners Involved In Galamsey Without Prosecution? It’s Strange!

Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana

A Rocha Ghana has demanded that the government make sure foreigners engaged in galamsey, or illicit mining, endure the full force of the law before being deported.

This is in accordance with the government’s policy of expelling foreigners who are found to be involved in galamsey, or illicit mining, right away.

Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, criticized the practice of deporting foreigners without holding them accountable for their conduct under Ghanaian law during an interview with Citi FM on Thursday, April 10.

His worries stemmed from what he saw as unfairness and double standards in the treatment of both domestic and international criminals.

Bosu claims that being lenient with foreigners erodes attempts to successfully tackle galamsey and conveys the incorrect message about accountability.

The environmental advocate underlined that implementing legal punishments for violators, regardless of nationality, is necessary to deter illegal acts and protect the integrity of Ghana’s laws.

According to Mr. Bosu,

“It is not a solution. The only solution is to make them face the full rigours of the law. Let them serve their terms before you let them go. What about the Ghanaians who are wallowing in our prisons—are they not humans as well?”
