At the Mobile World Congress, Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro to international markets.

The Xiaomi 13 starts at 999 euros (approximately $1,053), while the 13 Pro costs 1,299 euros.

The Chinese electronics manufacturer will compete with Apple and Samsung in the higher end of the market, where margins are higher and the market is still growing.

Xiaomi launched its lead cell phone internationally on Sunday February 27 as the Chinese hardware giant endeavors to take a cut of the top of the line market and challenge Apple and Samsung.

The Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro were first introduced in China in December 2020, but the company with its headquarters in Beijing, China, is now bringing the devices to markets outside of China.

Analysts say that the ever-popular Apple iPhone, Honor’s surprising strength, and fickle Chinese consumers—who frequently switch between Android hardware brands in a flash—present Xiaomi with a number of obstacles inside China.

Through a strategy of producing high-quality devices at very competitive prices, Xiaomi has become one of the largest smartphone manufacturers over the years. Using a similar strategy, it began expanding into international markets around seven years ago. However, it is currently trying to expand into the higher end of the market, where margins are higher and the market continues to expand.

According to Canalys data, high-end smartphones, those that cost more than $800, will account for 18% of the overall handset market in 2022, up from 11% in 2020. The Chinese rival will face competition from Apple and Samsung as it attempts to enter the premium market. In 2022, the high-end market was dominated by Samsung and Apple devices, according to Canalys.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has acknowledged that it is extremely challenging to compete with Samsung and Apple.
