Ghana Holds Funeral For Eight Officials Who Perished In Helicopter Tragedy

Eight high-ranking government officials who sadly died in a helicopter crash earlier this month are being remembered with solemnity in Ghana today. Hundreds of mourners, including the president, vice president, members of parliament, traditional leaders, and international dignitaries, have gathered for the state funeral, which is taking place in Accra’s Independence Square.

When their plane crashed in the Ashanti Region’s Adansi region, the eight officials—whose names have been formally verified by the government—were on an official mission. Although the reason of the crash is still being investigated, early reports point to unfavorable meteorological conditions as a potential contributing factor.

A brass band played somber music as a military honor guard carried the coffins in, draped in the country’s flags. Visibly distraught, family members offered heartfelt homages, characterizing their departed loved ones as devoted public servants who gave their lives while performing their duties.

President Mahama assured the families that the government would offer all required assistance and commended the deceased authorities for their steadfast dedication to the advancement of the country in his eulogy.

“Ghana has lost some of her finest sons. Their memory will forever remain etched in our hearts,” he said.

Burial ceremonies will take place in the deceased’s hometowns after the funeral rites. Since the day following the tragedy, flags have been flying at half-mast nationwide in remembrance of the dead.
