Democracy Hinders Growth, Tougher Measures Can Help Ghana—A-Plus

MP for Gomoa Central Kwame Asare Obeng (A-Plus) says he does not support democracy because, in his view, it hasn’t helped economic development — especially in Ghana. According to A-Plus, what the country sometimes needs are severe punishments and firm, even aggressive, measures to change people’s behaviour and accelerate development. He made the remarks while speaking on United Showbiz on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

A-Plus — who won a parliamentary seat in 2024 and is an outspoken public figure — argued that the usual democratic processes can be slow and ineffective when urgent reforms are required.

“Sometimes we need to be crude, we need severe punishments and aggression to change the minds of the people,” he said.

He added that, democratic niceties should not prevent decisive action when the nation’s development is at stake.

The comments add to A-Plus’s reputation for blunt, controversial commentary. United Showbiz, which aired the episode on October 4, featured the MP discussing these views alongside other entertainment and public-affairs items on the programme.

The remarks touch on a sensitive debate: balancing civil liberties, rule of law and accountability with demands for rapid economic progress.
