Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, a former education minister and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared that if elected president of Ghana, he will implement free university education.
Dr. Adutwum said at one of his campaign appearances that his goal is to ensure that all Ghanaians, regardless of their socioeconomic situation or history, have access to and can afford education at all levels. He feels that it is time to expand the Free Senior High School policy to higher institutions because the former government’s successful program has shown that funding education has significant national benefits.
“Education remains the most powerful tool to transform our nation. If we could make senior high school free, then we can equally make university education free. It’s an investment in our youth and in Ghana’s future,” Dr. Adutwum emphasized.
He noted that the policy would be implemented in phases, with priority given to students pursuing critical courses in science, technology, engineering, and education. He added that funding for the initiative would come from efficient management of national resources and partnerships with the private sector.
Dr. Adutwum, who once served as the Minister of Education, has long been recognized for his contributions to Ghana’s education reforms and advocacy for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.
Many people have described the proposal as ambitious but potentially transformative if well executed.
As the NPP prepares for its upcoming presidential primaries in 2026, Dr. Adutwum’s pledge to expand access to higher education is expected to be a major talking point in his campaign.
