Deputy Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) International Relations Directorate, Fred Agbenyo, has stated that the prices currently being offered to farmers in Ghana are the best in the country’s history.
Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Mr. Agbenyo said the government’s pricing strategy reflects its deep commitment to improving the livelihoods of Ghanaian farmers.
“The price that we’ve given the farmers is the best ever,” he stressed, responding to recent discussions around agricultural incentives and farmgate pricing.
He emphasized that for years, farmers have struggled with unstable market conditions, but the current administration has taken decisive steps to guarantee fair returns for their hard work. According to him, this has not only boosted farmer morale but also encouraged increased agricultural production.
Mr. Agbenyo attributed the achievement to prudent policy decisions, stakeholder engagement, and investments in the agricultural sector aimed at ensuring food security and improving rural incomes.
While critics have argued that more must be done to support farmers beyond price adjustments—such as improving access to inputs and reducing post-harvest losses—Agbenyo maintained that this pricing milestone is a critical foundation for broader agricultural reform.
Some panelists on the show, however, questioned the sustainability of the current pricing system and whether it truly reflects input costs and inflationary pressures. In response, Agbenyo insisted that mechanisms are in place to ensure long-term gains for farmers.
Ghana And Côte D’ivoire On The Welfare Of Farmers
The comment has since sparked further debate in both political and farming circles, with many calling for transparent data on pricing benchmarks and farmer income levels over the years.
As Ghana’s agricultural sector continues to play a pivotal role in the national economy, discussions like these remain central to shaping future policy direction.
