According to President John Mahama, the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure program will ensure that Ghana has the best road network in West Africa in the next two years.
On Wednesday, November 5, he made this commitment during a sod-cutting ceremony for the renovation and repair of the 195-kilometer Wenchi–Bole–Sawla route.
He called the situation “extremely unacceptable” and pointed out that the road had been allowed to deteriorate despite the fact that over 2,000 vehicles use it every day, making the trip from Wenchi to Sawla up to eight hours long. Additionally, he claimed, it has turned the road into a popular target for armed robberies.
“The whole of Ghana is going to be a construction site for the next two years. Wherever in this country you go, roads will be under construction. Twenty-four months after the launch of the Big Push, you will have the best roads in West Africa.”

The project is anticipated to reduce road accidents by roughly 45%, vehicle operating costs by 40%, and travel time between Wenchi and Wa by more than 50% when it is finished.
During this stage of the Big Push, he declared, they will:
▪︎ Reconstruct the Fufulso–Sawla road, complete the Bole–Mandari–Chache connection to the Ivory Coast border, and integrate it into a continuous high-quality highway stretching from Techiman through Wenchi, Bamboi, Sawla, Wa, and Hamile.
▪︎ Direct contractors working on the project to prioritise the hiring of local labour.
