I Am Now Convinced NPP Cannot Retain Akwatia Seat

Kofi Bentil

IMANI Africa’s Senior Vice President, Kofi Bentil, has stated his firm belief that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will lose the next Akwatia by-election.

In an interview with TV3, Mr. Bentil stated that the NPP’s chances of holding onto the seat had been undermined by a mix of internal party divisions, rising voter dissatisfaction, and recent tensions in the constituency.

He claimed that the incidents at Ernest Kumi’s funeral, in which some NPP supporters publicly jeered at NDC officials, only served to emphasize the region’s long-standing political animosity and differences. Since many constituents are growing increasingly unsatisfied with the way their complaints are being handled, he contended that such an environment does not bode well for the NPP.

“I am convinced that the NPP will lose this by-election. The signs are written on the wall. The people of Akwatia are not happy, and the internal wrangling within the party makes matters worse,” Mr. Bentil stated.

He further explained that Akwatia, known for its diamond-rich history and political competitiveness, has always been a swing constituency. While the NPP has traditionally maintained a strong base there, cracks in unity and voter frustration over unfulfilled promises may tilt the balance in favor of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Bentil cautioned that if the ruling party fails to address these concerns swiftly, it risks not only losing the Akwatia seat but also setting a precedent for similar defeats in other constituencies across the country.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to officially announce the date for the by-election, but political activities have already intensified in Akwatia. Both the NPP and NDC are expected to put up strong candidates in what analysts say could be one of the most fiercely contested by-elections in recent years.

For now, residents of Akwatia wait to see whether Bentil’s prediction will materialize or if the NPP can defy the odds and maintain its hold on the constituency.
