During the Presidential Media Encounter on September 10, 2025, President John Mahama made a specific statement regarding rent challenges in Ghana.
He admitted that many Ghanaians do not abide by the laws pertaining to rent, particularly those governing the amount of advance rent that are being demanded. He emphasized the need for the Rent Control Department to protect renters who are at risk.
In order to make rent more accessible to the public, the president underlined the necessity of increasing housing coverage.
When asked about his “reset agenda” on housing, President Mahama stated that his government would use the State Housing Company Limited to provide actual, reasonably priced dwellings.
A Look At Excessive Rent Advance Demands In Ghana
According to him, attention is being paid to examining and fortifying the laws governing rent, including ensuring that the provisions restricting advance rent and controlling increases are upheld.
In order to ensure justice in the landlord-tenant relationship, he seems to be in favor of policies that lessen the burden on renters (such as advancing less and increasing the predictability of rent increases).
He brought up the fact that Ghana pays a significant amount of rent for its diplomatic residences overseas—reportedly more than $15 million a year—and stated that the government will change its emphasis from renting to owning those facilities in order to cut down on that expenditure.
