Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia By-Election, has described the peaceful nature of the Akwatia by-election as the most significant outcome of the contest.
Speaking on Angel FM’s Morning Show with host Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Mr. Asumadu emphasized that the absence of violence was the biggest achievement for both political parties and the people of Akwatia.
“For us, the fact that there was no violence, no bloodshed, and no intimidation is the biggest victory. Ghana’s democracy has shown maturity once again,” he stated.
The by-election, held on September 2, was keenly contested by the two main political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP, following the vacant parliamentary seat. The NDC eventually won, strengthening its numbers in Parliament.
Despite the fierce political rivalry, the election was largely incident-free, a development that has been welcomed by civil society groups, election observers, and security agencies.
Mr. Asumadu noted that elections in Akwatia in previous years had been marred by tension and accusations of intimidation. He said the recent peaceful atmosphere reflected improved collaboration between the Electoral Commission, security services, and political stakeholders.
“This is how politics should be conducted. We may disagree on policies and leadership, but violence should never be part of our democracy,” he added.
Political analysts argue that Akwatia’s example should be replicated nationwide to further strengthen Ghana’s democratic reputation.
NDC Secures Supermajority In Parliament After Akwatia By-Election Victory
Observers from the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) also confirmed that the polls were conducted in a transparent manner, with only minor logistical issues reported.
While congratulating the NDC for their victory, Kwame Asumadu urged supporters of both parties to prioritize development in Akwatia rather than partisan conflict. He also encouraged the newly elected MP to focus on addressing local challenges such as unemployment, infrastructure, and healthcare delivery.
The Akwatia by-election, though a single constituency contest, has once again brought into focus the importance of peaceful democratic processes in Ghana’s political journey.
