Wole Soyinka

On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Nobel Prize-winning author and critic Wole Soyinka announced that the American consulate in Lagos had cancelled his U.S. visa. During a news conference, the 91-year-old Nobel laureate confirmed the decision and expressed his satisfaction with the revocation.

Renowned for his candid opinions, Soyinka had previously owned U.S. permanent residency but gave up his green card in 2016 during former President Donald Trump’s first term, citing disagreements with U.S. policies. He claimed that in order to complete the visa cancellation at the counter, the embassy requested that he present his passport in person.

The revocation was carried out in accordance with regulations that permit a consular official or the Secretary of State to revoke a non-immigrant visa at any time and at their discretion, according to a letter he read to the media that purportedly came from the US State Department.

In Africa and beyond, Soyinka is a well-known voice on government, culture, and human rights.
