President Mahama Must Speak Now! – Ntim Fordjour on LGBTQ+ Photo Scandal

On the June 30, 2025 edition of Kokrokoo Morning show on Peace FM, former Deputy Education Minister and clergyman Rev. Ntim Fordjour (MP) criticized President John Dramani Mahama for his silence over a recent incident involving two gay men taking photos at a Ghana’s national monument— the independence square.

According to the Member of Parliament, during the eras of Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Atta-Mills and even Nana Akufo-Addo, “no homosexual dared to come to Ghana to misbehave.” He expressed deep concern over what he described as moral decline and national embarrassment.

Rev. Fordjour passionately called on Mr. Mahama to break his silence and issue a strong public statement condemning the act, which he views as “disgraceful” and contrary to Ghanaian cultural and moral values.

The incident has sparked debate online, with some defending the couple’s freedom of expression and others supporting Rev. Fordjour’s call for a firm stance on LGBTQ+ visibility in public spaces.

Status of the Gay Bill:

The original 2024 bill has expired. Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill on February 28, 2024, but it was not signed by President Nana Akufo‑Addo before the dissolution of parliament ahead of the December 2024 elections. Legally, this meant the bill lapsed and is now defunct.

In early March 2025, a group of ten MPs—including figures like Samuel George and John Ntim Fordjour—reintroduced the same bill as a private member’s bill, restarting the legislative process from scratch.

President John Mahama has acknowledged supporting the general idea (as a Christian adhering to traditional family values) but prefers that the bill be introduced as a government bill, with broader consultation, not just as a private member’s initiative. He also referred to the expired original as “effectively dead”.
