Affordable Housing: Chief Of Staff Rallies Stakeholders For Urgent Action

Julius Debrah addressing the guests at the Stakeholders meeting

In order to alleviate Ghana’s growing housing shortage, the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged the public and private sectors to act swiftly and creatively. Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ meeting on housing and urban development earlier this week in Accra, Mr. Debrah underlined that affordable housing access needs to stop being a political talking point and instead become a national goal.

Although housing projects have been planned by successive governments, he said, actual delivery has not kept up with demand, particularly for those with low to middle incomes. In order to investigate affordable building materials and adaptable financing options, he requested the Ministry of Works and Housing to work more closely with regional contractors, financial institutions, and real estate developers.

In order to remove obstacles and facilitate developers’ access to property for mass housing projects, Julius Debrah also demanded that land purchase regulations be reviewed. He emphasized that nationwide access to large-scale, reasonably priced housing solutions may depend on public-private collaborations.

“If we do not fix this, the urban housing gap will continue to grow, pushing more Ghanaians into informal settlements,” he warned.

Government Begins A Big Review Of The Real Estate Sector

The meeting brought together housing experts, civil society groups, government officials, and real estate developers to chart a new direction for sustainable and inclusive housing in Ghana.
