Ransford Gyampo, a professor of political science at the University of Ghana, warned political activists on Saturday, July 12, on TV3’s ‘Key Points’ that they cannot break the law on their own, regardless of the excuse they may have.
He said, although Hawa Koomson, the former MP for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, may have been attacked during the Ablekuma North rerun due to her past, this does not mean that people will take matters into their own hands.
“Hawa Koomson shouldn’t have been allowed to go near the voting centre because she has a past history. I, however, condemn the violence against her.
“Regardless of her action, two wrongs don’t make a right. We cannot take the laws into our own hands because we are angry; otherwise, we’ll be perpetuating the bad cycle,” Gyampo said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, July 12.
Additionally, Dr. Ishmael Norman, a security expert, stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) must to promptly identify and discipline the police officers who misbehaved during the Ablekuma North repeat.
According to him, the police ought to have identified the area as a hot zone in advance of the chaos that broke out during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary rerun.
Additionally, Dr. Norman criticized the police for their lack of initiative. He urged the police to bring charges against the attacker of Hawa Koomson, the former MP for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
He also blamed the police for the violence and denounced the attacks on her.
Dr. Norman added:
“The IGP should immediately identify the Police Officers who misbehaved during the Ablekuma North rerun and punish them accordingly.”
The voting process at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was suspended after chaos erupted during the Ablekuma North rerun in 19 polling stations.
